Punk haters (squares): Is there any punk music you like?
Devo seems to be the one punk-adjacent band rockers generally endorse. (Q: Are they new wave? A: They are Devo.)
The reason I ask is I had the Circle Jerks on and I remember back in the day, even the most stringent metal dudes seemed to like the Circle Jerks for some reason, at least in my hometown.
My kneejerk response would've been the Clash since they had that crossover appeal in the early 80's but they were really into politics and black music, both kryptonite to the average metaller.

Re: Punk haters (squares): Is there any punk music you like?
I liked the sex pistols nevermind the bollocks back when I was a teenager.
Nothing else grabbed my attention positively. I tried a few times to get into the Ramones but they just didn't do anything for me. Clash London Calling album was a big disappointment. Maybe my expectations were too high? I only really liked the title track.
I'm okay with devo. Never considered them punk though.
Anyway, that stuff belongs on Mars!

Not really, no. Maybe some X.
The Sex Pistols and The Ramones are a joke.
For being a punk band, The Clash tried really hard to be anything but.

Re: Punk haters (squares): Is there any punk music you like?
I grew up loving punk . It started with D.O.A. Making their annual trip to town. From there i got to see everyone from The Dead Kennedys , Black Flag , Bad Brains and The Circle Jerks ect.
I don’t think D.O.A. Gets the credit they deserve for teaching young bands how to get on the road and record their own albums. In those early days , after they came through town . It seemed like every kid started a punk band.

Re: Punk haters (squares): Is there any punk music you like?
I had to look it up since I don't know. I'll go by this random list of the "30 Best Punk Bands of All Time":Hatchets Molly wrote: ↑Tue Feb 11, 2025 1:59 pm What is "punk" anymore? Johnny Cash is punk in attitude. Anti-establishment?
https://consequence.net/2021/08/best-punk-bands-list/3/
Starting from #30. Dropkick Murphys. LastFM says I've listened to them 26 times, but not since 2018 and only that one song ("I'm Shipping Up To Boston").
Bad Religion. Oh wow, I've actually listened to them one time! Back in 2009.
Never heard of #28-#25.
Circle Jerks. Nope.
Never heard of #23-20.
Dead Kennedys. Nope. Social Distortion. Nope. Patti Smith Group. Nope. Rancid. Nope. The Replacements. Nope.
Black Flag? I thought I listened to them one time, but LastFM says no.
X? Ooooh, I've listened to "Wild Thing" 72 times, but not since 2019. That's not a very "punk" song if it's the same band.
Fugazi? Wow, I've listened to them three times, but not since 2007.
Descendents. Nope. Bikini Kill. Nope. Misfits? I thought I played them one time, but nope. Buzzcocks? Nope. Minor Threat? Nope. The Stooges? Nope.
Green Day? I've listened to them 63 times, but mostly the "Good Riddance" song. I think I deleted them from my library after Billie Joe called Vegas a shithole. Take that! Hope the $0.63 in streaming revenue makes a difference!
Bad Brains. Nope.
Sex Pistols? I thought I played that song that Motley Crue covered to compare, but nope.
Ramones? I've listened to them five times, but only Blitzkrieg Bop and not since 2019.
The Clash? Wow, LastFM says I've listened to them 43 times, but only the two hits -- "Rock The Casbah" and "Should I Stay Or Should I Go". Don't really care if they have more.
Punk music just seems like they're angry 24/7, never have fun, and don't do anything other than write an angry song that will never change anything, and I'm not an angry person. That's my uninformed stereotype of punk music, just like country gets stereotyped.
Off I go to listen to some Nickelback, Creed, and a bro country artist named Redferrin.

Re: Punk haters (squares): Is there any punk music you like?
Interesting list, Nate. Like many things, I think there is a spectrum from the hardcore (GG Allin) to the mainstream (Clash, Ramones) to the pop-punk (Green Day, Blondie, Blink??) then sprinkle in the rebels like Cash (I don’t consider him folk or country since he transcends genres) and others that I’m blanking on.
I’ve tried em all but I like melody and less anger. I’d rather listen to Green Day and Blink bc I’m basic and prefer to sing along.

If any of these count as punk…
Huge lifelong Green Day Fan
Offspring
The Clash
I had never heard “Never Mind The Bullocks” until last month. It was pretty cool. Only Misfits I’ve heard are the GN’R and Metallica covers. I’ve heard maybe five Ramones songs ever. I like “Infected” by Bad Religion and the two big Rancid hits.
Most of the old school punk bands where you’ll find their patches on the backpacks of generations of middle school kids, I’ve never heard a note from any of them. Maybe someday.

Punk was never my thing. I love Green Day, but I'm not sure real Punk fans even consider them punk.
I do love the Hard Core Logo soundtrack... the fake band with Hugh Dillon and Billy Talent.

Re: Punk haters (squares): Is there any punk music you like?
I eould think Thrash fans at least sppreciate the early albums of bands like The Exploited or Suicidal Tendencies, before their crossover phase.

Re: Punk haters (squares): Is there any punk music you like?
This thread.isn't really for me as I'm a lover, not a hater. But interesting that you picked Circle Jerks. They were probably the first US HC band I ever heard; on a school trip when I was about 15 or 16 someone else was playing one of their cassettes. (The same kid had a Master of Puppets t-shirt - and this was around 1987) But despite hearing and seeing many hundreds of "punk" bands since then, I've never actively sought them out since, although I've seen Keith in Off! and the Flag 'reunion of everyone who isn't Greg or Henry' tour. I'm finally correcting that in March as they're supporting Descendents.Chip Z'Hoy wrote: ↑Tue Feb 11, 2025 1:06 pm Devo seems to be the one punk-adjacent band rockers generally endorse. The original punk bands were just glam guys into Bowie, NY Dolls, Iggy Stooges, T-Rex, Alice Cooper, etc. Sid Vicious even had a Marc Bolan perm! After punk they're part of the new 80's glam crowd like Hanoi Rocks and Lords Of The New Church. The best punk album remains The Heartbreakers LAMF, sounding like a big influence to bands like GN'R and Faster Pussycat. 80's punk was a lot of shit .

I would love to hear a version of Milo Aukerman fronting Dead Kennedys from back in the day. I fucking love DK's instrumentation, but I just kind of deal with Jello Biafra's vocals. It's not enough to turn me off to them, but def not my favorite part of it.Hatchets Molly wrote: ↑Tue Feb 11, 2025 1:59 pm I like Alkaline Trio (does that count?).

I like Bollocks, great album, also the Stiff Little Fingers Inflammable Material album, though it’s been a long time since I listened to it.
I think a strong argument could be made that To Fast for Love is a punk record.
Don’t mind Green Day either.

The Heartbreakers album is pretty good. Always liked "Pirate Love", "Chinese Rocks", and "Born to Lose." Jerry Nolan's drumming is really good.TumblingDice wrote: ↑Fri Feb 14, 2025 6:41 pm The original punk bands were just glam guys into Bowie, NY Dolls, Iggy Stooges, T-Rex, Alice Cooper, etc. Sid Vicious even had a Marc Bolan perm! I grew up thinking punk was crap noise. But there's a nightly punk rock show on Sirius XM, and I appreciate it so much.
It's refreshing to hear stuff from the '70s/'80s you're not burned out on. And the songs are short and go by so fast, there's no time to dislike any of it.

Social D has always been my bookend for how far I go in this direction (and even then, I prefer their post-‘90 material). Appreciate punk’s attitude and admire its sense of community, but the musicianship has always been a deal-breaker for me.

Adore that album. Love Somewhere… and Sex… too. Only really liked about half of Hard Times, though. New album is finally due out later this year - looking forward to it.
