Rush had a guy backstage doing something with a keyboard and a bass - we had really bad side-of-the-stage seats for the Hold Your Fire tour and we could see him.

As a side note, the concert was in a huge arena and the three red balls were suspended from the ceiling - and the supports were green. They looked like giant fucking tomatoes.
Who you saw was Geddy 's bass/keyboard tech. RUSH didn't have any people playing any parts off stage.
He was probably tuning up the next bass to give to geddy and probably jamming along to the song they were playing...

Yes, that was Tony Geranios (aka "Jack Secret"). He was Geddy's bass/keyboard tech for years. With the keyboard, he was loading samples that Geddy would then trigger on stage either by foot or using a controller keyboard. Tony never "played" anything behind the stage.

Sounds fine and they're playing their asses off, but it's got a completely different feel to the studio track.
That is a great clip. It may not sound exactly like the studio version, but it sounds great. Love the crowd in that video as well.
