From Guitar World magazine…” But Warrant’s few shortcomings should never be allowed to eclipse the simple truth that vocalist/band leader Jani Lane was one of the most accomplished song writers of the pop metal genre”

I think you meant to ask if John Lennon is still considered the Jani Lane of arguably the world’s worst band… certainly the most indisputably overrated.

Funny thing about Warrant. I find their music has held up better than Poisons. Heck Warrants stuff has held up better than a lot of bands music.

I don't remember anyone here comparing him to Lennon. Jani wrote 5 songs that were hits over a 3 year period. John wrote a few more than that.

I thought Donnie Vie was the hard rock John Lennon!
Jani wrote some good lyrics and melodies, the ballads in particular that hold up very well. They are just good examples of very well written songs like Journey or Richard Marx or whatever but in a more hard rock context.
Warrant only had 2 hit albums though. Dog Eat Dog was DOA and it was all downhill from there. Although some, including me, consider that album to be his masterpiece.

Re: Is Jani Lane Still Considered
Definitely a vast overstatement to make a point but Jani was a fantastic songwriter, esp when you consider that nobody in the band actually helped him write a note.
Several hits, great lyrics/melodies
One of my absolute fav songwriters

I don’t think whoever said that meant jani is as good as Lennon.
Jani just wrote more properly crafted songs, like Lennon.

Was he? I like the band but they were third tier at best imo, and not nearly as good as many of the other third and fourth tier bands. I saw them a couple different times with the first being the Firehouse and Trixter tour. I thought Warrant was the weakest of the three. Firehouse gets alot of sh*t on here a lot but they were aces high above and beyond Warrant, and their debut has aged really well. I’ll put it up against DRFSR any day. Trixter was the big surprise for me. I was a fan but they were much younger than both of the other bands. They were fun, energetic and very solid musically. Their first record was ripping. Warrant’s constant sexual cliches got tired fast.
I remember thinking Jani thought he was a little better than the rest of his band even back then. He also wasn’t the greatest live singer or frontman.

Hate is a strong word. I have a certain amount of empathy for him. His dad sounds like a d*ck and really messed him up. I just find him a tad overrated.

That whole era was full of great C-D level hair bands, but even then as much as I like Firehouse I'd still rank Jani and Warrant well above them.Tommy2Tone84 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 03, 2025 9:45 pmBrainy Lane wrote: ↑Mon Mar 03, 2025 4:35 am From Guitar World magazine…” But Warrant’s few shortcomings should never be allowed to eclipse the simple truth that vocalist/band leader Jani Lane was one of the most accomplished song writers of the pop metal genre”

Re: Is Jani Lane Still Considered
I was never a huge fan of the genre and I don't know who wrote what, but I personally think Skid Row and Bon Jovi had much better song-writing than Warrant ever did. others too. Maybe it was just the singles, but Warrant seemed cheesy as hell to me. Even back in the '80s someone once told me (who wasn't a hair metal guy) he was some sort of a prodigy, so what do I know?

It's crazy to me that he was given a hard af name like JOHN KENNEDY OSWALD and insisted on being called Jani Lane.
Jani Lane wrote "Big Talk." JOHN KENNEDY OSWALD wrote "Machine Gun."

John Kennedy Oswald should have started a band like Marilyn Manson with John Lennon Chapman, Bobby Sirhan, Martin Luther Ray Jr and Abraham Wilkes Booth

Re: Is Jani Lane Still Considered
Jani Lane is a weird name, because it sounds Finnish. If it was spelled Jani Laine, there would be a few male namesakes here. It's that common. As for Lane, I think he said it in an interview that Jani was originally meant to be spelled Johnny, not Janey. But he got tired of correcting people.

Re: Is Jani Lane Still Considered
I always thought Jani was one of the best song writers of the metal or pop era of that time. It sucks his demons and the Record company fucking him over got the best of him.
I always thought record companies got there's in the end. Now bands and artists really dont need them, tick tock and youtube will give them the exposure they need. They can record there music on a laptop.

I'm finding it difficult to masturbate to this. I'm trying, I just have so little to work with...

You have this a little backwards...
His name was John, and he was going by Johnny... but wanted to spell it different, then the typical spelling.
So he spelled it Jani, as in 'John-Knee', but people were mispronouncing it, calling him "Jay-Knee", not "John-Knee", and over time, it stuck and he was Jay-Knee not John-Knee.

This board, and the dudes on it, fascination with Jani Lane has always baffled me. And it's only the dudes! Girls never liked him.
I will admit that I never listened to whatever solo stuff he did.
Or, any Warrant album after the first one.
You know why? Because I heard Cherry Pie and Down Boys. Why would I listen to anything else from this band? Those songs were terrible. The videos were terrible. They sucked!!!!
They opened for Queensryche on the Mindcrime tour in San Diego, 1990-ish?(who put this tour together???) They got booed off the stage. Not by me, I would never boo anyone. But the rest of the place felt differently.
