KISS was named by and for Peter Criss

Newly released docs from the Pophouse purchase of the KISS catalog show that founding member and writer of KISS' biggest hit, Peter Criss wanted the band to be named in his honor as KISS, a takeoff of his name CISS. The bigger than life drummer revealed that at the bands outset, his opinions and creativity were the driving force behind the initial success of the band.

April shit aside, his previous band was called Lips and from that Paul joked about calling the new band Kiss and it stuck. So it wouldn’t have been KISS without Peter’s previous band.
