Van Halen 2007 Reunion Tour Press Conference

This is terrific. Why does this feel like it was 5 years ago? That's the weirdest part about getting older, I'm finding: Everything feels like it just happened. I still have dreams about this record store job I had in 2001.

That's going to be my Rosebud, that record store job. Last words: "Lateralus release party... Weezer's... Green Album..."

Anyway, this press conference is grade-A DLR BS. This is Gene Simmons-level promotional gymnastics. CARNIVAL BARKER SHIT.

What's the VH version of Kisstory? This is VAN HALISTORY.

- Dave's story about people stopping him on college campuses: "You're that white guy." Were they big tough guys with tears in their eyes? Did this take place in Niagara Falls?

- Dave noticing that the man asking a question is a porn star (Evan something) and getting weirdly defensive about it. Then Ed getting defensive about that and saying "Be nice, he's a friend of mine." Classic Van Halen: A very simple interaction turns awkward and then finally, into a complete miscommunication.

- Dave's radio show! Replacing Stern was a suicide mission. Anyone that took that job was going to be a sacrificial lamb. I think had Dave held out a couple more years, he could've really cooked on satellite radio. (And by "cooked," I mean in the Roth way. Meaning absolute nonsense from start to finish.)

- I know I'm a total mark but I really liked the part of this era where Dave and the brothers would reminisce about the old days. It seemed to be the only time they were ever on the same page, this shared nostalgia. I'm a sucker for army-buddy type shit.

- Roth repeatedly saying they're "young and skinny" only highlights the overweight child on stage standing next to his father, the human cigarette.

- Edward: Does Jesse Pinkman know that you raided his wardrobe?

Love these guys though, even Wolf. There will never be another Van Halen.

When they announced Kool and the Gang as the opener, that solidified it. I love Kool and the Gang, but the whole thing was... fuckin weird. Funk band opening is weird. Having a chubby teenager in the band is weird. Weird joke about Michael Jackson's death, weird joke about Valerie - who is one of the guys on stage's mother. Roth thinks he's on top of his game, but he is not.

Ed looks like he'd rather be anywhere else than onstage next to Roth.

Greatest band in the world when they were firing on all cylinders, but at the same time these guys could fuck up boiling a pot of mashed potatoes when left unsupervised.

Kool And The Gang didn't open the reunion tour. They opened the 2012 tour.
