Don't forget political nonsense, porn and cute cat photos. That's what the social media "revolution" gave us. AI may surpass the internet as the 2nd most overhyped technology. The most overhyped? Everything space of course. Nobody cares about space.Chip Z'Hoy wrote: ↑Sat May 24, 2025 4:13 am I sort of think AI is headed the way of every other major tech innovation: There's massive "This will revolutionize everything!" versus "This will destroy civilization!" debate and then in the end, it's really only useful for advertising.

Researching the author of this piece a bit, it seems one criticism of him is that he is often very pessimistic and talks of topics as if he is an expert when he is often not.
That said, almost every respected AI expert or tech titan thinks there is some probability that AI could cause the destruction of humanity. Whether it's 5%, 20% or higher.
That said, I don't subscribe to Wiseacre's views about current AI. Simply put, it's pretty fucking amazing where it is in only 2 years. It's not "code" in the same sense as procedural code. These large language models are modeled on the human brain and how it learns and processes information. Where it goes from here and how fast, who knows, but the experts talk of advancements that are massively faster than even exponential growth.
The singularity is coming.

I am still stressing out as Summer is here...
Why?
Killer Bees of course...
I remember as a kid in the 70's it was the big scare... on the News, etc... swarms of Killer Bees from Africa or South America making their way north!
Are they here yet?
And what about California falling into the ocean? That's been about to happen for 4-5 or more decades... or... the BIG ONE, that will surely topple every sky scraper in the 213.
But what about the Atomic Bomb? Wasn't that the world threat as well?
Of course with all the buildings, and freeways and expanding... there will be no more Trees, or Grass if we continue, right?
Oh, and don't forget, the global warming is so bad, that when the Glaciers all melt, NYC will be under water.
Feel free to list the rest of the "Sky is falling" world threats here...

The "life" will get sucked out of society long before the robot uprising.
The latest AI-generated videos look ridiculously lifelike. Soon, entire movies and TV shows will be created via "prompt" - no actors, cameras or sets required.
Future generations will search online for the Beatles, Frank Sinatra and Led Zeppelin - and the real shit will be buried in a sea of AI-generated copycat music. Few will know the difference. Most won't care.
Art and entertainment becoming soulless isn't even the worst part. We've already entered an era of suspicious news headlines and content. Was that story written by a bot? Are you arguing with one in the comments section? It's hard to tell anymore.
In the confusion, we'll lose the ability to hold politicians accountable. Fake videos will be used to smear opponents. "It wasn't me" will be everyone's excuse when caught red handed. It's a 1984 future, but with video as well as words.
We'll be begging the robots to finish us off.

Also, I'm not worried about AI taking over. It'd need intelligent people to program it, and considering the collective intelligence of modern society as of the past decade or so, we'll reach real-life Idiocracy long before we ever see robot singularity.

And The Big One...oh yes, we always heard about that. Not so much these days.
The Big One already occurred, in 1906, in San Francisco. That is the largest recorded earthquake in CA history at 7.8.
And this is why our buildings are now built to withstand this type of occurrence, especially in the Bay Area.
The next big one happened in 1994, 88 years later, in Northridge, Southern CA, 500 miles away from SF. This was 7.4 if I am not mistaken. And while it was devastating, the city was up and running in a week or so, power, water, etc.
By my calculations, we have 31 years before the next "big one".

I remember this as a kid in the 70s and worried about it. Lived in Florida then, so Florida and Texas would be the first to go. There were a couple of bad movies about it.
