Less popular hair bands opening for major headliners?

Post by ParaDime77 »

What lower end hair bands did you watch open for a major headliner?

Not saying Jackyll was a hair band per say, but watched the band open for Aerosmith in 1993.

Skid Row with Johnny Solinger opening for KISS in 2000. Honestly, he was so convincing as Bach l didn’t pick it up until the 5th or 6th song.

Those are just my examples, I’m certain there are way less or bands that open for bigger groups in different areas.

The Killer Dwarfs opened for Iron Maiden for a tour. It was a fairly odd pairing but they seemed to like each other.

The first few are below even the low end but still hair bands..
Paganini opening for Mötley
Zinatra opening for David Lee Roth (replacing Poison to my disappointment)
Don Patrol also opening for Roth - replacing Warrant when Jani Lane broke his ribs
Icon and Electric Angels opening for Ace Frehley
Thunder opening for ZZ Top
Love / Hate opening for Ozzy
Little Angels opening for VH

Was it Little Angels or Baby Animals. Baby Animals had a great album at the time.

I don't get the premise.

Less popular bands open for more popular bands. That's how it's always been, right?

I read it as C level hair bands opening for whatever.

Bang Tango opening for Cheap Trick

Vixen opening for Bad Company etc

Possibly Extreme opening for ZZ Top when it was booked but not by the time the tour started. Same for LA Guns and Billy Squier or Ratt and Billy Squier.

The thing is in 1989 to 1991 there were a lot more opening act level hair bands than arena headliners.

It was Little Angels. Stockholm 1993.

I saw Baby Animals opening for someone a few years before that. Bryan Adams, Roxette, someone like that.

Indeed it was even if it was the "wrong" line-up of Icon and Ace was past his prime.

I had never heard of Electric Angels before that show and considered skipping them but I lived nearby and had nothing to do so I went early. EA turned out to be the best band at that show even if Icon and Ace were good too.

The Ritz, former Studio 54, in New York, February 1990.

Ventura Theater, correct?

If so... I went to this show, as we were friends with KOTH.

Johnny Crash opened for Motley Crue on the "Dr. Feelgood" tour.

And... the obvious choice everyone missed... was, Skid Row being added to the Bon Jovi tour in 1989 as a complete unknown to 99.9% of the audience.

But... with Doc, Jon, MTV, and Flom/Atlantic throwing everything into them, by that summer, they were a legit draw on their own.

Jon wanted Skid Row there because he was making money off their record sales, though.

Kingofthehill/Steelheart played same venue as Tuff in Fresno next to the Spaghetti Factory
I even bought Steelheart tickets at Ticketmaster when they went on sale.

I believe Tuff played Fresno twice next to the Spaghetti Factory..I only went to 2nd show
1st show I was on vacation on camping trip - so I don’t count that as a loss
Camping trips always ruled . I stayed in the motorhome with kitchen and card table lounge. I wasn’t going sleep on the ground in a tent. I was a diva even then

Not necessarily a "hair band" but Little Caesaer opening for KISS in 1990 comes to mind. For whatever reason, Winger couldn't do a few shows in the midwest and they moved Slaughter up to direct support and had Little Ceaser has special guests. They were 100x better than Slaugher for whatever that is worth.

Saw Alice in Chains open for Tesla and Great White in 1989 I think in Spokane. AIC were unknown and pretty much and a full on glam hair metal band then.

Fast forward to 1991 and Van Halen's FUCK tour - AiC may have been a bit more "popular" due to MitB being on MTV, but you wouldn't know it. They were booed off the stage ahd Layne went after the hostile crowd. Fast forward again to 1993 and they were the conquering heroes at Lollapalooza who blew the "headliner" Primus off the stage.

Certainly not at the show I saw. But it was late and people were tired ...

AIC were excruciating dull the 4 times I saw them in 1991 were a little better in 1993.
