Do you agree with Lemmy that Randy was brilliant, but he got better after he died, because everyone does.

So glad this isn’t a leaked porno thread.

Re: Lemmy on Randy Rhoads
Shit. I thought Randy was amazing while he was still alive.
He and EVH were the absolute pinnacle of hard rock guitar gods when I was in school.
Maybe more people noticed Randy since his death, but that is just a mathematical function of time. Ozzy was just starting his career and was sort of an underground hit when Randy died.
All of us teenagers knew who he was, but he hadn't crossed over into the pop culture to where adults were conscious of him and was still growing in visibility. His bat-biting antics and stuff were beginning to get traction, but his music was still just known by young metal fans.
PROBABLY why there is no pre-shot Randy stuff...I meannnnn...the one thing we have is from a fucking public access cable show lol.

100%
RR’s death added nothing to his clout unlike so many other entertainers. It was EITHER EVH or RR even before he died. He was as respected as Eddie and his influence was universal before and after he died. No hype. And for the record I’m more team-EVH overall

Maybe your judgement is clouded because you were "in the know" at the time as a serious musician, but his popularity definitely increased after he died for the average rock fan. Then the 80's shredders came along and he was left behind.

Re: Lemmy on Randy Rhoads
I was like 14 when he died. I wasn’t yet playing “seriously”. I don’t even graduate until ‘86. All the other guitarists I knew were huge fans of RR and EVH. He was considered a guitar god from the first Ozzy album
Of course I am talking about guitar players. I doubt my wife knew who Randy was before or after his death.

So did Lemmy. I love Motörhead but they weren't a huge band except for the NWOBHM era circa 1979-83. After they - especially Lemmy - died they became rock gods with merch and deluxe releases on Sabbath and Maiden's level.pieceofme wrote: ↑Wed Jul 16, 2025 10:20 am https://www.youtube.com/shorts/pDa-plfQj3Y

This is an absolutely ridiculous statement on Lemmy and Motorhead.Love_Industry wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 6:03 amSo did Lemmy. Lemmy wasn't already a "Rock God" before he died?

Randy did get better after he died in a way - because he passed away in his prime.
We never got to hear him get old and boring or release a shitty grunge album. We never heard him do a nu-metal album with George Lynch.
It's like if Zakk had died after No More Tears. People would unquestionably rate him higher than they do today.

This was happening way before Lemmy died.Love_Industry wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 6:03 amSo did Lemmy. I love Motörhead but they weren't a huge band except for the NWOBHM era circa 1979-83. After the Ramones, Motorhead T-shirts were the go to rock t-shirts.

EVH certainly stopped innovating and started repeating himself in schlockier and schlockier ways in his last 30 years. His songwriting chops also went to shit, and the internet making his not-great personality visible did him no favors.FreddyFender wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 6:55 am Randy did get better after he died in a way - because he passed away in his prime.

Had EVH gone down in a plane in '84, it would just be all legend for him. As it is now, his legacy is conflicted and clouded by a bunch of bullshit.

Re: Lemmy on Randy Rhoads
EVH didn't write songs, he wrote riffs. Without actual songwriters in the band- Roth and Hagar - all we would get from him would be a bunch of VH3 type albums.

Re: Lemmy on Randy Rhoads
True, but his soloing was already recycling bits of his seventies licks by the Hagar era.
...and it was a little disheartening that his writing style never really progressed. He was cutting edge in the seventies, putting down riffs that were ahead of their time...then in the eighties, they were OF their time, and in the nineties they were old fashioned...by A Different Kind of Truth it was positively retro, even relying on seventies demos for the material.
I mean, FFS, the guy was SO creative when he was young, but got in a rut and never came out. Still writing eighties music in 2012.

Re: Lemmy on Randy Rhoads
Exactly. "Lemmy is God" was around for many years, partly as a joke at his apparent indestructibility re his drug and alcohol intake, but partly because his image came to be shorthand for the embodiment of 'metal'.Wednesday 13 Fan wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 6:47 amThis is an absolutely ridiculous statement on Lemmy and Motorhead.Love_Industry wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 6:03 amSo did Lemmy. Yep. Prime example is Hendrix.Sleek wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 11:09 amEVH certainly stopped innovating and started repeating himself in schlockier and schlockier ways in his last 30 years. If we had got a bunch of synth-heavy adult contemporary albums from Hendrix in the 80's, like we did from Santana and Miles Davis, his legend wouldn't be half of what it is.
