Is Miles Away underrated?
I’d argue it’s a top 5 80s power ballad, but I don’t feel it gets the same mentions as others. Maybe it’s just from where I’m sitting.
Time won’t forget what you meant to me.… C’mon, ain’t no guy in the room that doesn’t sometimes think of “the one that got away”. That line still hits.

Winger best song, it’s not even close
It would be cool to be the band Mike Judge always wanted to be. Jealousy of Kip is the best

Jani Lane and Bret Michaels should form a band called "Nelson II"

Re: Is Miles Away underrated?
It is underrated as I never hear it in the super market, department stores or on the local "Magic" style radio station.
Originally written by Paul Taylor during the early '80s, he offered this song to Eric Martin (later of Mr. Big) who declined even though he knew it would be a hit. Taylor stated he wrote "Miles Away" for his girlfriend Emi Canyn who was one of the Nasty Habits, the background singers for Mötley Crüe.

It's a quality pop song that was rocked up a bit for the era. Great song. It's a shame Winger took the brunt of the contempt because of Stuart. They had quality album cuts as well like Rainbow in the Rose.

I used to think it was really sappy but I’ve grown to love it. I’m not sure about top 5 but it’s a great song. It’s one of those hard to appreciate if you’re really young but as you grow older you finally get it.

It's a great song, and Winger never had a bad ballad, but I'd still rank both ballads from the debut higher. And as always, "Without the Night" should've been released as a single.

Big Winger fan, but "Miles Away" sounds like the "pap" Chicago was releasing in the 80's.

Wingers’ Without the Night is one of the greatest ballads of the genre IMO. Huge mistake mot to release it as a single.

Miles Away is a great song, but wasn't it a hit? So I'm not sure about underrated.

It was their highest-charting single on the Billboard Hot 100 (#12), so... rated just right.Hellsinkey wrote: ↑Sat Aug 09, 2025 8:07 pmI've said that myself here too.windycitycane wrote: ↑Sat Aug 09, 2025 1:56 pm Wingers’ Without the Night is one of the greatest ballads of the genre IMO. It's inferior to both Headed for the Heartbreak and Without the Night in my humble opinion.

Re: Is Miles Away underrated?
It was Winger’s best charting single so I wouldn’t say it’s underrated.
It’s the least “Winger” sounding ballad though since Paul wrote it, not Kip and Reb.
I think it is a very well written pop/rock ballad like “Look Away” from Chicago. Any band/artist could’ve recorded it.
It probably got Paul the Steve Perry gig but ironically that album sucked! I’d be interested in hearing some other songs he’s written.

Re: Is Miles Away underrated?
I can't stand their music, but this song I always thought was decent. Well, that explains why I thought it was a decent song. It wasn't written by Winger.tooth wrote: ↑Fri Aug 08, 2025 7:28 am It is underrated as I never hear it in the super market, department stores or on the local "Magic" style radio station.

Winger get a lot of shit, but I would argue they were a much better band than people, such as our very own Chip Z’Hoy would ever give them credit for.
I’m in full agreement. It’s a tough choice between MA and HFAHB. Paul Taylor hit it out of the park with that song. Winger always had great ballads.

While I like Miles Away and Headed For A Heartbreak better, I agree it was a huge mistake not to release Without The Night at MTV.

Re: Is Miles Away underrated?
Good call. Winger were a way better band than the majority of their peers and competitors. They were always beyond pros and wiped the stage with most of the bands I saw them share tour packages with. I’d put them up there with the Scorpions, Whitesnake, Def Leppard and Bon Jovi. As big of a Skid Row fan as I was, Winger were a much a better band. When it comes to “big” bands like Motley Crue and Ratt, forget about it. Winger made those clowns look and sound like a bunch of amateurs. Same with low hanging fruit like Poison, Great White, Warrant and Bulletboys.

Re: Is Miles Away underrated?
So I saw a video of Kip talking about this. I think it was on his acoustic tour at bookstores years ago. He wanted to make Without the Night a single, but Paul Taylor refused. He reworked it into Miles Away. In the video he sings both the Miles Away line and Without the Night back to back and then says. "It's the same song".Tommy2Tone84 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 12, 2025 5:05 amwindycitycane wrote: ↑Sat Aug 09, 2025 1:56 pm Wingers’ Without the Night is one of the greatest ballads of the genre IMO. I read the opposite. That Paul brought the song in and Kip said no. Then wrote Without the Night.
The chorus melody and structure is similar. The rest of the song is totally different.
