When bands change their logo

Post by Rocker4Real »

Bands will often alter their logo over time for various reasons. What are some of your favorite examples of this? What are the worst examples? Did you hate when Metallica made their logo less pointy?

I always thought Motley changing theirs was cool. It always looked great too. I think my favorite is Theatre of Pain.

Motley and Warrant are the first that come to mind.

But nothing makes me happier than when I see that lime green Poison logo! So simple yet perfect.

Ratt made slight changes. I think the best was for the Detonator album.

The new Public Image Ltd logo is a travesty, but I understand the guy who came up with the original is suing Lydon after all these years…

You think they would have that straightened out at this point. He's been playing a ton of shows with PIL since his wife passed & I hope he comes to the US.

KISS had to change their logo in Europe because the two SS's looked too much like the Nazi major paramilitary organisation logo.

Not a fan of Priest changing their logo to add that stupid cross thing. Why?

I hate that so much. You have an A+ designer (Roslev Szabo) who designed the "real" logo, and they give it to a C- designer and say "Hey can you add the giant cross to it? We dont care if it's off balance or anything." (classic Jayne Andrews, if you ask me.)

I would never buy a piece of merch that had it.

Faster Pussycat had some rad logos. The Wake Me era was great. So was the FPC icon they used on the Kiss HITS tour merch.

Yeah. I think it’s been one thing after another lately. His wife is gone, pistols sued and won over that dumb tv show, then his best friend died, then the logo issue. I feel for him.

His manager died too. When I saw P.I.L. in 2023, I wondered who was the loud character, who was talking next to me to a group of people before the show. Some weeks later I read an obituary in a music paper, turns out the guy was their manager.

I think that was only Germany and Austria. In Scandinavia the only place the ZZ logo showed up was on German import vinyls. Which were not that common, the regular stores carried Holland or sometimes US pressings with the real logo.

Trivia, in Vienna I got the German vinyl of Best of Solo Albums with the classic logo. Should be rare, maybe withdrawn?

This logo was perfect, I never understood why Coverdale even considered fucking with it.

Totally pointless downgrade.

Yeah Whitesnake could've just cleaned up that original logo. It was a great concept, kind of juvenile execution, but just small refinements was the call. Not a re-do.

AC/DC in the 70s/Let There Be Rock album, though that seemed to be a case of finally getting a logo vice a change. Apparently they ripped off the guy that designed it.

Eh, alright, I guess

They pretty much changed it every album, like Motley, but without it being noticed that much. From here on, they arent really designing logos, but rater picking fonts.

Aerosmith's classic wings logo is one of the greatest ever, but the Deuces Are Wild revision they utilized during their Vegas residency was absolutely horrible.

I liked the Get Your Wings logo too, although it's clearly a more amateur job.
