KISS meets Phantom and Star Wars Holiday Special were released 3 weeks apart in 1978

Post by HueyRamone »

How much crap were fans supposed to endure in a single month?

Did anyone here watch both as they premiered? What was your reaction?

Is the Kiss movie streaming? Star Wars fans pay big money for copies for the Holiday Special. I tried to watch it and couldn't finish.

I can remember afterwards thinking that sucked big time. And I was a big fan of both.
Star Wars survived of course because the real sequel had yet to be released. By 1980 KISS was over.

I was a huge KISSS fan. I was with my grandmother at Big K putting boy scout flyers on car windshields for something I can't remember but I had to get home in time to watch KISS. I don't remember watching the Star Wars special but I remember seeing Star Wars when it came out in the movie theatre. I had to sit in the floor since there were no seats left.

My parents had close friends who I grew up calling my Aunt & Uncle. I watched both over their house with my "cousins". I remember loving both. Where they both on Saturday Night at 8:00?

I never saw the Star Wars Holiday Special except for some clips on YouTube. But agree 100% on Phantom. I was 12 and super-excited to watch it. I kind of recall having a tough time staying with it. Even that young, I remember thinking how bad the acting was (by EVERYONE in the movie). Worse than the Shazam/Isis Hour by miles.

I caught most of the Star Wars Holiday Special the only time it was aired. As a six year old Star Wars fan, I was confused. It didn't make any sense. Also remember feeling ripped off. It was obviously bad.

I'd already seen Star Wars twice at this point, and like almost every other elementary aged kid in North America at the time, was a huge fan. Lunchbox, coloring books, film comic book, cards, action figures, etc.

Didn't see the KISS movie until the early 80s. Would have been one of those summertime movies of the week when almost nobody tuned in. I watched it with some older cousins who made fun of it.

I saw them both realtime. I was 10 and even at that age knew both were leaning towards embarrassing (even though seeing KISS on TV was EPIC. My 10-year-old balls were severely busted at school by older kids due to the KISS movie but never heard anyone really talk about the Star Wars special back then.

Now, go watch my awesome redux of the KISS klassic…

I remember the Kiss one happening, but do not honestly remember if I watched it.

The Star Wars one I definitely remember watching. It was funny because all any of the kids talked about pertaining to that was how cool Boba Fett was. The rest of it was shrugged off as a bad hallucination like: "Well...that happened. Anyways....you wanna go collect some cans and get comics?"

Man did I shoot some loads as a youngster to that twat on Isis and even as a kid I thought Shazam might have been the worst acting I've ever seen until Desmond Child acting straight in The Love On A Rooftop Video. GTFOH

I saw both. I had barely turned 10.
I remember I was home alone watching kiss on our main color TV, but I had to watch the Holiday Special in my bedroom on a small black and white TV.
I didn't know any better, I enjoyed them both.

Didn't see the Star Wars special, but I did see the KISS movie.

Was a huge fan as most of my friends were, so we all waited anxiously for the movie to come on.

I remember watching the opening credits with them bouncing all over the stage like a bunch of idiots and my hopes quickly disappeared.

Even at a very young age, I was smart enough to recognize bullshit when I saw it.

Oh, and those scenes with Gene growling . . . absolute garbage.

Chewey's son: "MRAGGHHHHHHUHHH!!" (No, I dont wanna!)
Chewey's wife: "MRAGGHHHHHHUHHH!!" (Son, come over here!)
Chewey's son: "MRAGGHHHHHHUHHH!!" (No, I dont wanna!)
Chewey's wife: "MRAGGHHHHHHUHHH!!" (Son, come over here!)
Chewey's son: "MRAGGHHHHHHUHHH!!" (No, I dont wanna!)
Chewey's dad: "MRAGGHHHHHHUHHH!!" (Damnit, go over there)
Chewey's son: "Mragghhhhuuhh." (I will, but im sad about it)

I had to bail not long after that. Every minute felt like an hour.

They are nowhere near a stage in the opening credits. Nor are they bouncing.

The Kiss movie was actually released in movie theaters here in Europe in 1980 with the generic score from the TV movie replaced by actual Kiss music.
I went twice, each one in the afternoon.
The 2nd time the movie theater actually wanted to cancel cos only like 12 kids showed up, but then took pity on us and ran the movie anyway.
As an 11 year old it was a confusing experience.
On the one hand I was mesmerized watching Kiss playing live on a huge screen. At this stage I had never even seen film footage of them except the video for I was made for loving you.
But on the other hand I was very aware what a horrible movie it was with ridiculously bad acting.
