Which 80s bands don't hold up?
Stuff that you really liked back then, but in retrospect doesn't seem all that good anymore. Which bands would that be?

Re: Which 80s bands don't hold up?
It’s funny but I listen to way more White Lion and Trixter these days than I do Motley or Skid Row or even Def Leppard.
I think it’s not so much stuff not holding up but when you’ve been listing to this stuff for 40 years you just burn out even on the classic stuff. Also I’m at the age where it’s gone from nostalgia to sadness. I listen to songs that I loved when I was 14 and didn’t have a care in the world. Songs that remind of past friends, girls, etc. People still love this stuff because it takes them back but that’s also a bad thing especially if one isn’t all that happy currently. It’s a reminder that you had the world in your hand and you fucked up.
I think the bands that didn’t hold up are ones I don’t like to begin with like Twisted Sister.

Most of them. 70’s were a much better decade for music than the 80’s.

Ratt. Im always a little surprised when people on here list them or their albums as a favorite.

Kiss never on level of Danger Danger- Skidrow-Slaughter
Kiss desperate to be cool as opening bands on tours but never came close to achieving this
Fasterpussy Cat 3x billion cool’r than Kiss
60s and 70s rock music truly was garbage
Any Van Halen era still sounds dull and boring

Jani Lane and Bret Michaels should form a band called "Nelson II"

For me, the heavier stuff.
Slayer, Testament, Megadeth, Anthrax, Exodus... even Metallica. Loved it all, but honestly I never want to hear any of that shit ever again.
Van Halen, Dokken, Ratt, WASP, Def Leppard, Whitsnake, Great White, etc get play almost daily by me. But I'm just not interested in the heavy stuff anymore.

Motley Crue- it’s amazing how much garbage is on their albums that I used to think was cool, just because it was Motley Crue. I mean their entire catalog is 75% crap.
The only thing I listen to Motley Crue related is Vince’s first solo record and some of MC94.

Re: Which 80s bands don't hold up?
I don't really listen to the big mainstream albums from the time (Slippery, Hysteria, etc) but don't mind hearing them occasionally. KISS were my band at the time (saw them live a lot, big collection of records) but now I recognise their post Creatures output as being almost all complete garbage.
All thrash from that time sounds like comedy music to me. First Metallica album was okay but beyond that, I just found it awful. Bands like Slayer were just ridiculous. Silly.
Bands that do really hold up for me are Hanoi Rocks, L.A Guns, Love/Hate, Pussycat, and C-Level bands like The Throbs and D'Molls. Just great sleazy rock n' roll. To me, nothing better than that.
I still love that first Poison album to death and enjoy bits of their other albums, Fallen Angel especially.
Not strictly 80s but same vibe - been playing the Black Crowes a lot recently, first two albums. Both superb records.
Also been enjoying some Mr.Big which I never really bothered with at the time.
Still dig hearing some Whitesnake from the 1987 album, love the videos.

This thread brought to you by… Bon Jovi.
Try to go listen to Lay Your Hands on me, or Bad Medicine. You’ll want to invent a time machine to go back and slap your young self silly for ever thinking it was cool.

All the sleaze bands. As a whole, they weren’t on the same level musically but had the cool vibe. Vibe is irrelevant now. Lack of songs and skill is all I hear now.

I’ll admit sometimes I start the New Jersey album off with Born to Be My Baby.

The Vinnie Vincent invasion . Both albums are completely outdated and embarrassing. The screeching vocals, wanky ,soulless shredding guitars and idiotic lyrics . Even the band photos and art work are hilarious.
But let’s all hope the Box set finally gets done for 2030.

Nearly any album with bad/raw production.
I listened to all of that on a crappy boombox where everything sounded like crap. But once I got a 'real' stereo, I realized how crappy some if it really was.
For the poster who said he listens to more White Lion...sonically, Mane Attraction sounds so fucking good, even if the songs aren't all there. That goes for a lot of bands at the tail end of the scene. I wish a lot more records sounded like Firehouse's debut.

Re: Which 80s bands don't hold up?
Funny. I recently bought the first VVI on unremastered CD. Hadn't listened to it in a while before but it still holds up to me. VV can write songs and play, I don't mind the vocals and the lyrics are at least well written. VV has his way with words even if the themes are questionable. Much better than anything Slaughter ever came close to, now that's a bland, generic band that doesn't hold up - but they weren't that great to start with. I get a feeling that nobody in Slaughter had anything to say musically or lyrically so they approximated styles that were popular and made it sound somewhat convincing.kytepunches wrote: ↑Sun Aug 24, 2025 9:55 am The Vinnie Vincent invasion . I agree.... to an extent. I was a card carrying member of the VVI fan club (Had the pink folder of 8x10s and the pink picks that came with the card too).Love_Industry wrote: ↑Sun Aug 24, 2025 12:17 pmFunny. I liked the first album, didnt buy the second. When Slaughter came out, they obviously got ahold of the fan club, because they kept sending me postcards, telling me to ask to ass Up All Night to my local radio station. I had never heard such a bland piece of bullshit, and always hated Slaughter. VVI was silly, but at least they sung about sex and whatever else. Slaughter was middle of the road pablum. So of course it did 10 times as well.
From what I heard of it, the 2nd VVI album was pretty lame too.

Why are you here? It’s run by the guy from Tuff.
Re: Which 80s bands don't hold up?
Anthrax. Used to like them but nowadays any of their 80's records is a real slog to listen all the way through.
In Finland we have this thing called "Reilu Meininki".
