With a lot of bands, there is a point where they stop just doing whatever comes out naturally and start TRYING to sound like themselves. That's usually when they become intolerable. Iron Maiden TRYING to sound like Iron Maiden is not Iron Maiden.
That's also when they start saying dumb shit like: "It's going to be like Destroyer" or "It's going to be like SATD."
Nobody TRYING to make any of those albums would have made those albums, and nobody who is trying to can. The self-conscious return to form never happens.

All the bands that had a "shredder" from Mike Varney's Guitar Player Magazine column. Your Vinnie Moore, Tony MacAlpine, Greg Howe - all that shit. None of them had a clue how to write a good song.

Oh no! They all sucked as musicians, and performers, on Look What The Cat Dragged In. Now we all loved it and it was cool for what it was. There's no explaining that, it was just awesome.
But they got progressively better, pretty quick.
This was the opposite. Great band, lousy musicians!
