Rick Davies (Supertramp) dies

Post by Hellsinkey »

(Not) bloody well right, goodbye stranger.

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cp98zg2k2xko

"Supertramp founder Rick Davies, who wrote and sang some of the rock band's hits, has died at the age of 81.

The English vocalist and keyboardist died on Saturday, a decade after being diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, the band said."...

Another band that broke up at the near-height of their powers and could never get past the acrimony.

Reminds me of PInk Floyd. Rick was the David Gilmour in the Supertramp story.

They really had some great songs. It's a shame they could never put their issues behind them and get back together for one last tour.

I wonder if Roger Hodgson has commented, haven't found anything.

Hodgson offered to rejoin for their last shows at 02 Arena in 2010 but Davies refused, saying it would only benefit Roger's career and not the band's. Then they went out and played all the songs he wrote anyways. They were planning some reunion shows in 2015 apparently but then Rick got sick and they scrapped the idea.

What was their beef & why was it so extreme? Is there a definitive book about the band? I always liked their stuff and the Wiki page has me interested in learning further.

The usual. Sick of touring, wanting to spend more time with his family, didn't feel the rest of the band shared his beliefs, etc. It really took a turn a few years later though when Davies went back on their gentleman's agreement to not play each others songs live. That ruined whatever friendship they had left from the band days

I can never unhear Michael Scott singing Goodbye Toby when I think of Goodbye Stranger.

Great band, with several stellar albums!

Hearing "Dreamer" and the piano intro is one of my earliest memories of really being tuned into a song and saying; "That's awesome!"

"Crime of the Century" and "Breakfast In America" are absolute perfection top to bottom!

Yep.

Roger was bent out of shape when Supertramp also promoted its 2010 "reunion" tour using his face in many print ads and playing "his songs."

I think this is the final show from the classic line up, from 1983.

Roger sounds great there. He announces he was his last show.
Does anyone know if he announced it beforehand? (And I thought they went to America after this show?)

The announcement was a bit strange, indeed they toured in the USA and Canada in 1983 after this. I looked it up from Setlist.

I saw them in 1985 with Gowan opening. Good show but definitely missed the Hodgson songs

Considering Hodgson wrote 80% of their hits, that would be a downer.

Definitely. Still though, they played some of their proggy deep cuts which was cool. Gowan was in his Strange Animal phase during this time and was fucking great. Probably better than the headliners lol
