The joke that is Motley now. Is this what…

Post by PhrozenInferno »

… non hair metal fans thought of them in their 1980s heyday?

Embarrassing, entirely un-self aware, childish music, rudimentary talents (mostly), cashing in on trends, entirely derivative, embarrassing. Let’s not forget the far more unsavoury qualities too as evidenced in the Dirt. Kind of strange to be in this camp now

Nope, I thought the same thing when I saw them open for Ozzy back in '84

As a teenager, I idolized them, thought they were the coolest band ever!! As a Grown Ass Man, I loathe them, I literally can not stomach any of them including Mick ( although by far the least offensive ). They are a Sham of the highest order. Millionaires that can not even pay a team of PR execs to make any one of them come across as remotely likeable let alone "cool"

Last time I checked they were playing Stadiums with Def Leppard and doing a Vegas residency.

Yeah, I'd like to see Mick in the band, Vince skinny and singing all the words and maybe chill out with all the backing tracks but hey...if you don't like it, don't go. I said it the other day..the Greatest Hits still holds up as an awesome collection of songs. Not many bands could write that many hits, that many anthems.

What has this got to do with anything? Playing stadiums with Def Leppard in 2025 is not ‘cool’ and certainly doesn’t go anywhere near redeeming their joke band status, in fact it exposed them to even greater heights. And a Vegas residency? Swing and a miss.

Also, all indications are that Leppard blasted them off the stage every night of that tour…

…and so did Poison, for Christ’s sake.

Same. Although I still like some of the early tunes, I feel like I was scammed as a teenager... as if every single bit of it was a lie.

Yep. 15 year old me thought they were utter shite when I first heard & saw them on tv in 1983. I loved most things metal back in the day and they shouldv'e been right up my alley taste-wise but I hated them right from the start. Never did warm up to them beyond maybe two songs

when they hit I wanted to be just like them. live fast and die young. I even got kicked out of a hotel they were staying in trying to meet them. now as an adult, i realize most of the hype was just hype. No one lived like that 24 hours a day and lived. I used to think as a early teenager that KISS walked around as "KISS" 24/7 too. I remember reading somewhere many years ago that Vince was so embarrassed of the S.O.T.D. clothes that he only wore suits to the band business meetings. Rock and Roll is just like Hollywood. They tell you they live one way 24/7 and basically live the opposite. Not saying they didn't enjoy the fruits that came with music but to that extreme? I cant see it. Not 24/7. Is till enjoy their early work and some of the stuff they did later on. Just know now that in reality, they or someone was a smart business person to push them along the way.

For a few years they seemed to live like that. One of my teachers was married to a doctor working for what became Live Nation and went to the 1984 Monsters of Rock show in Sweden to see AC/DC. She hung out backstage and met Mötley and some VH members but not AC/DC for some reason, she said Nikki was "nice and polite" but they (Mötley) were drunk when they arrived and a review claims they started playing at 12 AM....

Two years later I met them on the ToP tour at a hotel and Vince was sober because he had to on that tour or he would go to jail, Nikki and Mick were zombies and Tommy couldn't even get up and they had to roll him out in a laundry cart according to a hotel employee - we didn't see him at least.

The band whose party / drugs image seemed to be most unlike how they were would be Guns on the Illusions tour. I don't doubt they were for real before they got signed and in the AFD era but already on their 2nd studio album it was only Duff and Slash living that life on tour.

Motley Crue sucks now, but they ruled "back in the day" , 1st 5 albums are classic, MC94 is great for what it is, and New Tattoo is fun. As a live band they were solid until 2010 +/-.
They are a joke now, but for 30 years they were a top tier Sludge band.
