Today, not so much. The real question here is, how many Superbowls will Brady win without a truly great defense and a kicker who can nail game winning FGs on command? The answer? ZERO. Not to mention they don't have their little tape recordings anymore.
The Colts can win outdoors. See their victory in the 2006 divisional round in Baltimore.
AFC Championship - January 18, 2004. New England 24, Indy 14.
Yeah, that 10 point field goal Vinatieri kicked as time expired was huge...
Conditions: 31 degrees, light snow, wind 10 mph, wind chill 23
Manning's stat line:
23 for 47, 237 yds, 1 TD, 4 INTs
AFC Championship - January 16, 2005. New England 20, Indy 3.
Manning was generous that day. He decided to make Ty Law into a guaranteed hall-of-famer.
Conditions: 27 degrees, light snow, wind 17 mph, wind chill 14
Manning's stat line:
27 for 42 238 yds, 0 TD's, 1 Int,
That 2006 playoff game vs Baltimore - it was 54 degrees out. I said Manning isn't the same in bad weather, not that he can't win when he plays outside in decent conditions.
Manning doesn't play out doors in bad weather very often due to half his games being in a dome, 3 divisional road games being in warm climates, and scheduling that makes most of their cold weather foes face them either in the dome or early in the season where weather isn't a factor. But when he does face winter weather he is 4-10. Fuck, no wonder people get him confused with Bart Starr...
I wasn't attempting to make a comparison to Brady, but since you did:
Manning's playoff record: 9-9, 1-1 in Superbowl
Brady's playoff record: 14-4, 3-1 in Superbowl
Head-to-head: Brady 9, Manning 6
I am not the one predicting another SB for New England. I think they'll be lucky to win more than 1 playoff game this season with such a young defense. I see them as either a 3/4 seed or a wild card team that could steal a game because of their coach & QB combo and then getting beat in the divisional round unless Belichick is able to work some sort of miracle with that defense. But they will most certainly beat Indy in Foxboro in late November with Indy having their own defensive issues and Manning being ineffective if the weather is bad.
