The new hybrid QB may be the future but with a few exceptions the life expectancy will probably only be 5 years. There is still plenty of room for the old school.
I gotta say, this comparison gets trotted out all the time. Except people never bring up the WHITE GUYS with wheels, like Steve Young and John Elway, who went on to successful, hall of fame careers.
Not all QBs are the same. RG3 is black, and he's got wheels. That could really be the extent of the comparison with Vick, who seems to have inconsistency issues with his accuracy, doesn't seem too bright, and runs far too much.
Comparing him with RG3 isn't as much of a stretch as comparing him with JaMarcus Russell, as some complete mongs around here have done, just because they are both black, but it's not necessarily legit either.
From what I've seen from RG3, he's a pocket passer with a deadly accurate cannon who can ALSO run when he needs to. On Sunday, in the loudest venue in the NFL, where he easily could have been rattled and turned on the jets, he threw at every opportunity. The best throw he made in the entire game - a 20 yard sideline completion across the field and across his body - was made when he had 10 yards of open field ahead of him and could have easily run for the first.
As far as I could tell, his only significant runs came on PLANNED QB draw/option plays. Because he's a really fast guy, he'll have that option, and he did use it to get out of trouble several times before throwing it.
But I don't think he's Vick, not by a long shot. As far as Cam Newton goes, I have not watched him play much, as Panthers games don't end up on TV too often (thank god). But as much as he's running, this guy throws for 300 yards every game, no?
The "hybrid" thing is used as blanket to cover far too many players. I'll take a "hybrid" like Young, Elway, or RG3 any day. I wouldn't be interested in having Vick on my team - character issues aside - because he isn't good enough a thrower or confident enough in the pocket to pull it off. He's going to age very, very quickly playing the way he does. The line in Philly ain't doing him any favors, but he's ALWAYS played this way.
