I thought Edge of Seventeen was sung by Fleetwood Mac. I only found out a month ago that I was wrong.
I'm sure there are lots of people out there that thought John Cafferty "On the Darkside" was Bruce Springsteen. I probably thought so too the first time I heard it.
Semi-intentionally given they were looking for a band with a Jersey/Springsteen sound for the soundtrack.

Hearing Rockhead's "Bed of Roses" on Z-Rock radio in late summer of 1992, I assumed it was the lead-off single from Trixter's "Hear" album. It sounds a lot like Trixter.
Here's the video for the song:

Before I saw the video on tv I thought it was a Bruce Hornsby tune!

A girl in my 7th grade class told me it was Ted Nugent and I believed/repeated it for years.

Wow, late to this thread, but Sleek is pulling a Moggio here.
It's absolutely idiotic to contend Zep weren't A-listers in the 1970s.

First time I heard Helmet - Unsung, I thought it was Ozzy.
I thought the same - Ozzy's voice is so distinctive and hard to replicate, so I thought this was some amazing new Ozzy!
