Pick Your Poison Poll Edition: Motley Crue or Ratt?

Post by Tommy2Tone84 »

30 years ago I was a Motley fan tried and true. But having the perspective of an old man, Ratt were the better band by a million miles. Cellar, Invasion, Sky and even Undercover are radder than hell. I hated Detonator when it came out but I have come to love it. I don’t care if Desmond and Diane have their fingerprints all over it. Infestation is better than anything Motley has done in 25 years, maybe 38 years. I’ve never heard the yellow album.

Stephen > Vince

Warren and Robbin > MicK

Juan > Frank

Blobz & Tommy…well every band has at least one turd in the bowl

Motley Brew and Brandon are unforgivable sins where there is no atonement for.

I Want A Woman and Girls Girls Girls videos gave me my awesome lifestyle- still living the dream everyday and night!

Motley personal lives made them megastars - just this week Motley wife took down coyote

It’s like Baywatch(Motley) vs Baywatch Hawaii (Ratt)
Jani Lane and Bret Michaels should form a band called "Nelson II"

Yes and it's not as close as I expected. Ranking their top 5 albums: First three Mötley followed by first two Ratt. Top 10 songs: 8 Mötley, 2 Ratt (You're in Love and Wanted Man)

Got to give Ratt that they released less crap. The s/t sucks and Dancing Undercover is all filler, but not as bad as Swine, Mc94 and New Tattoo.

Not close. Ratt had a great guitarist but all albums are all filler, a couple decent tracks.

Motley had a bunch of filler plus standout tracks on all their records, plus a classic album in SATD.

Ratt were accurately rated by the public. The further they got from Round and Round, the more their success dwindled.

I’ll give Too Fast the slight edge over Cellar but Invasion was always more music to my ears than Shout even when I was a bigger Crue fan.

That didn’t happen with Motley, unfairly I might add. We kept buying their crap even when it wasn’t as good as their earlier material. Girls, Girls, Girls sold as much as the two that preceded it. Feelgood good sold more when it really wasn’t that good of an album outside of the singles. The red line was when they fired Vince and they went Seattle.

Ratt no doubt about it. Basically the same reasons that you put together:

Pearcy beats Vince. I could see an argument saying otherwise, but I think Pearcy is better.

Ratt's dual guitars are miles ahead of Mick. Not even close in every aspect for me.

Bass....better dancing, better base playing, REAL high pitched vocals vs whatever canned/jarred shit Nikki has going on there.

Drums.. Crue prob beats out Ratt, but Ratt is perfectly fitting for the music.

Songs... see the appeal for some Crue songs, but these days I think Ratt has Crue beat.

Both, but when forced to choose, I've always given Ratt the pussy-hair's edge because of OOTC. Both bands' first five albums are untouchably good, though.

Motley are a better band and better brand and better songwriiers and more legit Rock authentic even though they may not be as talented as certain Ratt members.

Damn, I just broke the tie in favour of Mötley: 13 to 12

I love Ratt, but Dancing/Detonator/Reach might as well be the same album, they all sound the same.

Mötley's first 5 albums are truly individual stand-apart albums. Theater/Girls/Feelgood have some filler, but so what? So do the aforementioned Ratt albums. Not to mention that Mötley came up with a different band logo on each album, that's pretty ballsy marketing!

Two bands with some great songs but a crazy amount of filler

Ranking albums again:

1. Out of the Cellar
2. Shout
3. Feelgood
4. Side 1 of Invasion
5. Too Fast
6. Detonator
7. Everything else (see filler comment above)

Pretty even. Maybe Motley by a hair. New Tattoo/MC94/Swine/Girls all decent (although MC94 massively overrated like the rest of the Holy Sludge Trinity)

That's the truth! I went with Motley here but I'm sure if we went song vs song, Ratt would win almost half the time.

The thing is that Motley have so many anthems. Ratt have cool guitar riffs and a few vocal lines here and there but those Motley songs are timeless.

Yeah they were definitely "2 good songs + filler" bands, but, after Invasion, Motley definitely won the "two good songs" battle.

While DUC is a dud for me I’m a big fan of RFTS and Detonator.

Vince was the better frontman and for me, along with Tommy’s drumming are the only
things Motley have on Ratt. Ratt was on average, better musicians, the better live band, had a cooler image
and while not as popular, still did very well for themselves at the time.

Motley were selling cheesy, forced rebellion. Ratt’s lyrics were way better. Motley’s sleaze
was a marketing ploy and vehicle. Ratt’s was honest and a natural thing.

Ratt by leaps and bounds. And it's not even close, despite a bit of filler in later Ratt albums. Ratt wins on strength of the reunion album, too, where Motley's haven't been good at all.

I like both bands, but aside from Generation Swine, I can still listen to/enjoy all of Motley Crue's albums, RATT on the other hand has a glut of forgettable filler.

Ratt by a mile. BUT, Motley during the TFFL & Shout eras, were the coolest looking most bad ass band out there. But musically, Ratt has always crushed them. Warren over Mick any day of the week and it isn't even close.

I think it’s influenced by British steel Audially, and kiss visually.

Looks that kill is the riff from You don’t have to be old to be wise. Knock ‘em dead is the riff to Grinder.
